The
pulse of England's Northwest is beating more strongly by the day. In
the midst of massive economic, cultural and social regeneration, the
five counties of Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire
and Cumbria are exhibiting a renewed confidence and a determination to
grasp the reins of change.
Industries in England's Northwest have traditionally enjoyed a
very particular heritage with a focus on the likes of textiles,
shipping and engineering. But shifting global markets have contributed
to the growth of new sectors such as biotechnology, chemicals,
aerospace and ICT.
Today the region, with a population of 6,881,000 and a GDP of
86.9 per cent of the UK average has fewer than one quarter of all
employees in manufacturing. And when this economic diversity is
combined with the region's academic innovation, unique culture, history
and people, the result is an exciting and stimulating place to live and
work.
